THE HON. MINISTER
MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND REGIONAL INTEGRATION
ACCRA
The Ministry wishes to bring to your attention that in recent times some applicants for the renunciation for Ghanaian citizenship have not attained prescribe age of twenty-one (21) years for the renunciation of Ghanaian citizenship as stated in Article 8 (1) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.
Article 8 (1) of the 1992 Constitution states as follows:
‘’Subject to this article, a citizen of Ghana shall cease forthwith to be a citizen if, on attaining the age of twenty-one years, he, by a voluntary act, other than marriage, acquires or retains the citizenship of a country other than Ghana’’.
Please communicate this information to the respective Missions to advise applicants to take note of the Constitutional requirement, as applicants only qualify to renounce their Ghanaian citizenship upon attaining twenty-one (21) years.
The applications would be revisited when the applicants are off age (21 years) and resubmit the request for renunciation for consideration.
Please accept the compliments of the Minister for the Interior.
